How to determine a kitten’s age?
It is sometimes difficult to determine a cat’s age when it joins a family. However, it is of utmost importance to know its age in order to properly take care of it and to give it the proper amount of food.
In this article, you will discover the key factors which will allow to determine your kitten’s age. To know more about the way age is determined in an adult cat, take a look at our article here.
1. A teeth analysis
A cat’s age is often determined by analysing its teeth. In fact, with time, its teeth will change. When it reaches three weeks old, the first teeth which will be fine and pointy, will appear. Those will be called “milk teeth”. Over the following weeks until it reaches four months old, the number of teeth will increase. The animal’s dentition will then be composed of 26 teeth. When the cat will be of four to seven months old, the milk teeth will fall and make way for permanent teeth. Its dentition will then be complete and will count 30 teeth.
2. An essential weighing
To determine the kitten’s approximate age, another factor is involved: its weight. In fact, at its birth, the kitten does not weigh more than 100 grams. The latter’s weight will then increase by 100 grams over the weeks. Hence, when it will be two months old, the cat will weigh around 800 to 900 grams.
3. On a human scale?
It must be noted that it is possible to calculate a kitten’s age with a mathematical system corresponding to the human’s age. Hence, when your cat will be one year old, it will correspond to 19 years.
